ABOUT
Aloysia Gavre is an internationally acclaimed director and movement artist who orchestrates human capability across stage, screen, and symphonic halls to turn physical daring into elegant visual storytelling.
-
Aloysia Gavre is a pioneering circus creator, director, and educator with over 25 years of global experience traveling the world as an elite artist and visionary leader. Her career began at age 18 touring internationally with San Francisco's Pickle Family Circus, following intensive youth training under Master Lu-Yi of the Nanjing Acrobatic Troupe, Shana Carroll, and at the École Nationale de Cirque. At just 23, she joined Cirque du Soleil, performing as an aerialist in the acclaimed productions Quidam and O for over 2,000 shows across 10 countries. Her aerial hoop act in Quidam was even selected to represent Cirque du Soleil at the prestigious International Circus Festival of Monte-Carlo, where she received special honors. This foundation in elite, high-stakes performance laid the groundwork for her future as a director who intimately understands both the physical and emotional demands of the circus arts.
Driven by a desire to innovate and share her craft, Aloysia transitioned into directing and choreography in 2004, beginning with the Off-Broadway hit Birdhouse Factory in collaboration with the Pickle Family Circus and Cirque Mechanics. In 2009, alongside her partner Rex Camphuis, she co-founded two Los Angeles-based institutions: Troupe Vertigo and Cirque School. Cirque School operates under the inclusive philosophy of "Anybody with Any Body," offering over 50 weekly classes to the public and thriving as LA's premier recreational and pre-professional circus training program. Concurrently, Troupe Vertigo has emerged as a leading cirque-theatrical ensemble, creating genre-defying original works directed by Aloysia, including Big Top for a New Generation, Nighthawks: A Film Noir Circus, and Tableaux.
Aloysia’s artistic signature is an eclectic mix of theater, circus, dance, and music that bridges the quirky with the sublime. Her willingness and exceptional ability to collaborate have led to groundbreaking partnerships with over 40 major symphony orchestras across North America—including the Seattle, San Francisco, Cincinnati, and Phoenix Symphonies, as well as the LA Phil at the Hollywood Bowl. Beyond the stage, her expertise is highly sought after in the film and television industry. She has provided bespoke choreography, circus coaching, and character consulting for high-profile projects, including coaching Rebel Wilson for her aerial performance in Pitch Perfect 2, assisting Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz with character research for Water for Elephants, training Quintessa Swindell for Black Adam, and coaching Andrea Martin for her Tony-winning physical role in Broadway's Pippin.
A passionate advocate for the future of the circus arts, Aloysia is a founding board member of the American Circus Alliance and serves on its Youth + Emerging Professional Advocacy committee. She frequently shares her unique perspective on circus creation through speaking engagements at TEDx, Directors Lab West, and the Center Theater Group. Her work has also been featured on the cover of Dance Teacher Magazine and in the book The Ordinary Acrobat. Always eager to collaborate on new creative endeavors, Aloysia brings a profound storytelling capacity, vast industry resources, and visual imagination to every project she touches, making her an invaluable partner for theatrical productions, corporate events, and multimedia artistic ventures.
